Full-Spectrum
Full-spectrum refers to the type of oil extracted from the hemp plant. A full-spectrum oil will contain all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids. That also includes terpenes, omegas, acids, and everything else the plant has to offer. Full-spectrum products are always recommended because the full range of cannabinoids contributes to the aforementioned entourage effect.
Broad Spectrum
Broad spectrum refers to hemp-extracted oil that has had the THC contents distilled out. This leaves behind all the other cannabinoids that are non-psychoactive. Broad spectrum products are recommended for those who are sensitive to THC and or being drug tested.
Isolate
An Isolate hemp product is one cannabinoid isolated, extracted, and added to a finished product. That one cannabinoid is the only cannabinoid present in said product.
Endocannabinoids
Refers to fatty acids that are naturally produced in the body. They bind with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in our body.
Phytocannabinoid
Phytocannabinoids are plant-based cannabinoids naturally found in hemp. They mimic our natural endocannabinoids. Because both endo and phyto cannabinoids share similar molecular structures. The top five phytocannabinoids are THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, and CBC.
Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
The Endocannabinoid System is linked to our central nervous system. The ECS helps maintain an internally balanced state. It adjusts our chemistry when our habits, good or bad, put us out of homeostasis. It does so by sending Endocannabinoids to areas we need balancing. The CB1 and CB2 receptors are the receivers of the ECS.
Bioavailability
The amount, in percentage, of substance that reaches circulation after being administered. Medications administered intravenously have 100% bioavailability. Medications administered via routes have a much lower bioavailable percentage.
Entourage effect
The entourage effect is a harmonic and euphoric feeling you get when all cannabinoids, fatty acids, and amino start to play their role in the body. You are more likely to get this effect from a full-spectrum product.
Psychoactive
Any type of substance that acts upon the central nervous system to alter the function of the brain. The alteration of brain function can cause changes in mood, perception, and behavior. For example, THC is psychoactive.
Tincture
A bottle that has an ingestible oil in it. Tinctures are most commonly used by botanical and herbal companies to package these herbal extracts. The hemp industry decided that tinctures are perfect to host ingestible hemp extracts.
Edible
Edible refers to products containing hemp extract that can be eaten. This includes gummies, chewing gum, mints, and chocolates all other common foods.
Concentrate
A type of consistency that describes a substance whereby the diluting agent is either reduced or removed altogether to produce a higher purity product (80-99%).
Water Soluble
A substance that will dissolve in liquid.
Terpenes
Organic compounds that make up a plant’s smell, taste, and color. For example, they make mint taste and smell like mint.
Cannabidiol (CBD)
Cannabidiol, CBD for short, is an organic compound found in the hemp plant. CBD is known for a variety of benefits. Some of the most common symptoms CBD is being tested for are pain, sleep, and anxiety. There is still more research that needs to be done before any claims are made.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
Tetrahydrocannabinol, THC for short, is an organic compound found in the hemp plant. THC is known mostly for its intoxicating effects. However, studies on THC show that intoxication is not the only effect it brings. Some studies have promising results regarding its effects on symptoms like pain, nausea, and lack of appetite. There is still more research that needs to be done before any claims are made.
Cannabigerol (CBG)
Cannabigerol, CBG for short, is an organic compound found in the hemp plant. CBG has claimed the title of being the mother cannabinoid because it is the base of all other cannabinoids’ molecular structures. Like CBD, CBG is known for a variety of benefits. However, it is most known for its effects when fighting inflammation. Research proves that CBG has better results fighting inflammation than CBD. There is still more research that needs to be done before any claims are made.
Cannabinol (CBN)
Cannabinol, CBN for short, is an organic compound found in the hemp plant. The hemp industry has given CBN the title of being the nighttime cannabinoid. This is because CBN has more relaxing properties than CBD and CBG. However, CBN will not intoxicate a person like THC will. Most people use CBN to aid them with sleep, relaxation, and anxiety. There is still more research that needs to be done before any claims are made.
Cannabichromene (CBC)
Cannabichromene, CBC for short, is a compound found in the hemp plant. Like CBD and THC, CBC is another cannabinoid that the plant produces in abundance. Most of the research on CBC has been done to fight cancer. CBC, like CBD, can have a variety of benefits. For example helping a person fight depression, pain, or even acene. However, there is not enough research to make any claims.
Sativa
A Latin word meaning “Things That are Cultivated.” People use the word to refer to plants that are grown to benefit humans. It is also a type of category certain strains of hemp fall under. These strains can produce euphoric, uplifting, and joyful effects.
Hybrid
A type of category certain hemp strains fall under. These strains are produced by breeding one strain with a different strain. Resulting in a strain that has aspects from both of the original strains. Most cultivators will breed a pure Sativa with a pure Indica to get a 50/50 crossbred hybrid.
Indica
A type of category certain hemp strains fall under. Indica originated in the Middle East. The effects of these strains are calming, relaxing, and pain-soothing. Typically Indica strains contain a higher level of THC and a lower level of CBD, compared to Sativa.
Certificate of Analysis (COA) / Lab certificates
The result of a tested hemp plant. COAs are proof of legality and potency. The testing is done by a licensed lab facility. COAs are very important to the hemp industry because they show transparency. It’s a bridge of trust between a consumer and a brand. Always, look for the brands that 3rd-party tests.
